HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Wednesday, July 3, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 1, you may prefer to stick to people, places, food and activities you know well as low levels of estrogen combined with period-related aches and fatigue prompt you to cocoon a bit. However, by the second half of your Week 1, estrogen will have risen to a level that makes you a tad more adventurous and curious, prompting you to want to meet new folks, travel to different places, sample unfamiliar food and sign up to do something you’ve never done before.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Be on the lookout for random bouts of euphoria–a giggly, blissful, glee-filled feeling that pops up out of the blue for no reason at all. You could mistake it for joy inspired by good weather or the sight of something beautiful. But, truth is, high estrogen is telling your brain to churn out lots and lots of feel-good chemicals during your Week 2. And sometimes you can get a powerful rush of positive feelings all at once that takes you by surprise.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’ve got a lot on your to-do list today, then use your time wisely. While you won’t be using up precious hours daydreaming about a cute crush or perfecting your appearance to attract a new hottie like you did in your Week 2, you will likely be nodding off far earlier today due to rising progesterone, which has a powerful sedating effect on you. So, pinpoint your most productive, energetic time of day and fit in as many tasks as you can during that phase before progesterone has you petering out.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Here’s the funny thing about your premenstrual Week 4. You could be humming along feeling fine and dandy. Then, BOOM! Something ticks you off and you go off on a loud and probably little bit scary tangent. The reason? You can point the guilty finger right at plunging estrogen. As this hormone descends, it brings down your brain’s level of mood-stabilizing serotonin, which, in turn, ups your risk of experiencing a flare of noradrenaline, a brain chemical that fires you up. Luckily, these sudden bouts of anger usually pass in just a few minutes. But, not before everyone within a 25-foot radius is fully aware of exactly how you feel when your co-worker doesn’t refill the office coffee pot/your mate builds yet another mountain of stinky socks on the bedroom floor/your cat vomits on your favorite pair of shoes/the world seems like it can’t get any crazier!
