Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Throughout your Week 1 and Week 2, you get better and better at figuring out what someone is thinking or feeling just by looking at them. Researchers theorize it’s because rising estrogen during this phase is pushing you to interact more with others and socialize, so being able to understand someone’s frame of mind by reading their expression would be helpful for creating closer connections.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Watch your nervous habits, like nail biting, cuticle-chewing and skin-picking. High estrogen and testosterone are amping up your nervous energy, which can make these types of behaviors more common during this week of your cycle. So, use techniques to prevent too much damage, like painting your nails, rubbing something unpleasant-tasting on your cuticles or wearing clothes that cover areas you’re prone to scratching.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Chances are, you’re going to have a tough time trying to recall someone’s name or a word you knew so well during earlier weeks of your cycle. The problem is that lower levels of estrogen plus rising progesterone is fogging up your memory a bit. Luckily, a recent study reveals an easy way to find the name or word you’re trying to recall: Say different sounds out loud you think might be close to the word you’re looking for. For example, if you’re trying to remember someone’s name and you think it might start with a “D”, try saying, “Dave”, “Doug”, “Dan” and other words aloud. Researchers discovered that hearing different sounds close to the word you want jogs your memory banks, helping you come up with the right word faster.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Even if you’re on a budget, you may find yourself putting lots of comforting items in your cart today, such as food, DVDs, books or makeup. Researchers found that we tend to splurge more in our premenstrual Week 4 as a way to distract ourselves from down moods and aches triggered by plunging estrogen. Just be sure to keep a limit on your wild spending ways. Otherwise, this same plummeting hormone could trigger deep regret, nixing the mood-lifting effect of your shopping spree.
