Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your Week 1 goes on, you may feel like you want to make an upgrade to your appearance, for example, changing your hairstyle, getting new clothes or simply painting your toes a new color. The reason? As the level of estrogen climbs this week, it makes you more focused on how others perceive you, plus it’s raising your self-esteem, making you feel as though you’re worth the improvement.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: To some, you may seem a bit brusque today. For instance, you may be blunt about your opinion of someone new your friend is dating, you may tell a co-worker who’s worried about her job to stop whining and either perform better at work or look for a new position, or you may dole out other comments and words of advice that are a bit, shall we say, to the point. That’s high estrogen and testosterone’s influence. As these hormones climb toward their heights in Week 2, they make you less likely to beat around the bush and cater to someone’s softer side and more likely to simply tell it like it is.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Try to avoid skipping meals or going too long between meals throughout your Week 3 and Week 4. Rising progesterone can make you more sensitive to drops in blood sugar when you go hungry, which can lead to fatigue, irritability, fogginess and the blues—symptoms commonly mistaken for PMS, but which are really just signs of a grumbly tummy.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may sense a slight lack of self-assurance today as estrogen plunges, taking confidence-lifting brain chemicals with it. As a result, you may find yourself hunching instead of standing up straight, less likely to volunteer to answer questions or second-guessing things you’ve said or done. Try not to beat yourself up about it. Instead, think back to successes you can be proud of. Research shows that reminding yourself of past achievements can help give a boost to flagging self-esteem.
