Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your Week 1 goes on, connecting with friends or making new ones becomes more important to you as rising estrogen pushes you to socialize. As a result, you may call up buds to schedule a girls’ night out, game night or shopping trip. Or you may look through lists of classes, events or social groups to find one that would help you meet new brand-new buds.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re likely going to prefer a slightly (or not so slightly) more intense version of life today. For instance, you may pump up the volume on your mp3 player, splurge on decadent or expensive meals you usually avoid or head to a club or social event because you know it’s going to be super-packed. The reason? As estrogen and testosterone climb toward their peaks in Week 2, they’re revving your energy and mood, which make you want to get more out of everything you do.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Don’t have the interest in jumping between the sheets with your partner? Don’t take it as a sign that the passion in your relationship is over. You’re just experiencing a drop in desire due to plunging levels of testosterone combined with rising progesterone (a seriously libido-dampening hormone). But, not to worry. By your premenstrual Week 4, your interest in intimacy returns again thanks to nerve endings that get stimulated in preparation for menstruation, which stir things up down below.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Because plunging estrogen is creating brain changes that ratchet up anxiety and worry, you may have an over-the-top response to a problem today. For example, if you misplace your car keys, you may end up tossing your whole house to find them. Or if a friend accidentally breaks something you need, you may go postal on him. However, most times, problems are simpler to solve (for instance, by retracing your steps to figure out when you last had your keys or finding a way to use an alternative item to the one that was broken). So, if you can, try to pause for a few moments before reacting to a problem to consider easier, less dramatic ways to deal with the situation.
