Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As estrogen rises in your Week 1 and Week 2, you tend to get more curious about people and the world around you. As a result you may notice you’re asking people more probing or follow-up questions that elicit more detail, you may be reading or listening to more news stories and/or you may be seeking out ways to gather more information, for instance, by attending a webinar, visiting an art gallery or taking a class.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: This may be difficult to hear, but you could get a little catty today, snarking on the way another woman is dressed or how she behaves. Believe it or not, it’s perfectly natural, say researchers. That’s because high estrogen is pushing you to be more competitive with other women as you approach ovulation. And one of the ways you subconsciously fend off potential romantic rivals is to deride them. Now that you know this impulse is just a side effect of high hormones, you can avoid hurting feelings by keeping those snarky comments inside or telling them to a trusted friend only when you’re way out of earshot of anyone else who can hear them.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you happen to see a photo or video of baby animals or baby humans like this one or (heaven forbid) have a live interaction with one, you may be convinced it’s possible to medically overdose on cuteness. The reason for your extra excitement when faced with the utterly adorable is rising progesterone. This “mothering” hormone ups your interest in any cuddly-wuddly, huggable creature and prompts a surge in feel-good brain chemicals when you see or hold them.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: I had an experience yesterday I’d like to share: I had to call back a company that kept messing up an important order of mine (one I need to roll out the forthcoming Hormone Horoscope app in October, so it’s very important). I’d made my first call to them about their foul-up when I was in the latter half of my Week 3. And I marveled at how rising estrogen and progesterone kept me calm, cool and level-headed about the whole frustrating problem–even as they escalated it by charging me for their mistake! By yesterday, however, I realized the problem still hadn’t been resolved and I needed to make a second call. Now in my premenstrual Week 4, plunging estrogen and progesterone were having the opposite effect on me: My heart was racing with irritation as I dialed the number, I wanted to scream when I learned the “direct phone number” the account manager gave was just their usual voicemail jail and then I wanted to curse when I finally got a live phone rep and she informed me that the last phone rep messed up again. It was then that I realized I wasn’t going to get anywhere by PMSing all over her (after all, she didn’t personally create the foul-up). And instead, I worked hard at recreating the calm, cool Week 3 Gab from the previous phone call who was all patience and sweetness. And it worked. The new phone rep resolved the problem in minutes and I got the order to go through. I bring all this up because you, too, may feel more frustrated and irritable about problems today. And though it may take more effort (way, way, way more effort) to remain patient and kind, chances are, you’ll likely have a more positive result if you do.
