HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 1, you may find it difficult to keep your eyes open as low estrogen combined with iron loss during menstruation drain your energy. So, if you’re driving or have to go to an important, though dull, meeting, try chewing peppermint gum, sipping green tea or doing a few jumping jacks beforehand, which are all study-proven ways to rev alertness fast. If it’s the second half of your Week 1, estrogen will have likely risen to a point where it’s boosting mental and physical energy. And for some women, this whoosh of energy can be a bit jarring, causing a bit of antsiness or excitability. If that happens to you, try to remember it’s just a side effect of rising hormones and it usually passes quickly. Then try deep, slow breathing, listening to relaxing music or distracting yourself, which can all help usher in calm.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Some could call you a bit direct or cold today. That’s because high estrogen is giving you a take-charge attitude and making you less patient with whiners who you think should pull themselves up by their bootstraps rather than invite you to their pity party. Try to remember than not everyone is feeling as capable of fixing problems on their own as you are right now, so try to eke out a little sympathy for them. That is, before telling them to brace up, get over it and move on.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: It may be more difficult to muster enthusiasm for things you need to today, for instance, you may dread going into a work meeting, do all you can to avoid going to class or put off joining friends for dinner. The problem is that rising progesterone coupled with lower levels of estrogen is sapping your mental and physical energy, making everything you do require just a bit more effort.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Unlike Week 2 gals, some may call you a bit pessimistic or defeatist. That’s because plunging estrogen is triggering more negative emotions and making you prone to focusing on the worst-case scenario. So, if you’re facing a problem yourself, you may be hoping for a bit of sympathy from others. And when giving advice to others, you may caution them that the end is near so they better plan accordingly.
