HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Have a health-boosting goal you’ve wanted to reach, for instance, starting a regular exercise regimen, cutting back on fattening foods or quitting smoking? Then aim to start pursuing your goal sometime in the second half of your Week 1. This is when estrogen rises to a level that ratchets up your desire to make self-improvements and pumps up your motivation and stick-to-itiveness. And these effects last all the way through the end of Week 2! Even better? This same hormone is reducing aches, pains, cravings, withdrawal symptoms and other discomforts that can come during the first few days of making a big lifestyle change, so making a healthful switch now is even easier than if you started it in your Week 3 or Week 4.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re probably using more positive words, such as “like”, “love” and “heck yeah!”, gesturing more, speaking a little louder and generally coming across as more optimistic and energetic as you interact with others in person, online or over the phone. That’s high estrogen and testosterone’s influence. As levels of these hormones climb throughout your Week 2, they make you more upbeat and outgoing when communicating with others. This makes it a great time to attend networking events, take your boss to lunch, invite a new friend to dinner or do anything else that helps you create a stronger bond with someone.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Romantic passion you had in abundance in your Week 2 suddenly cools this week of your cycle. Not only will you likely no longer feel a gravitation field-like pull toward the object of your affections that you did just days ago, but the tingles you got from kisses and caresses seem to have faded, too. What gives? You can point a guilty finger at your hormones: The combination of lower levels of estrogen and testosterone combined with rising progesterone is like a cold shower in the romance department.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Here’s a word of advice for you, Week 4 gal: When you feel the urge to trash an art project you’ve been working on for months because you feel it isn’t turning out brilliantly, donate your entire wardrobe to charity because nothing fits right or cut off all your hair because it’s just not doing what you want it to, take a deep breath and say to yourself, “It’s just plunging estrogen making me lose my patience.” Then, resolve to walk away from the garbage can/donation bin/scissors and reassess the situation once your Week 1 rolls around and estrogen levels climb again. That’s because when this hormone plummets, it robs your brain of feel-good chemicals, making you more easily ticked off and more critical of yourself. Especially if you haven’t eaten in awhile and/or you’ve consumed a lot of caffeine. And that can give you the urge to do something drastic that can’t be easily fixed.
