HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: During the first half of your Week 1, you may experience a bit of acne due to hormonal shifts that occur right before your period arrived, which allowed testosterone to increase your skin’s production of pimple-causing oil. However, by the second half of your Week 1, rising estrogen should be helping you feel a lot better about your appearance. That’s because as this hormone climbs, it’s reducing pimple flare-ups while also helping your body shed water weight (so your face is less puffy), evening out skin tone and triggering subtle shifts in soft tissue that make your facial features slightly more symmetrical and feminine-looking. And these beauty-boosting effects last all the way through the end of Week 2!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Practically anything can get you thinking about romance and intimacy today. Whether you spot a couple canoodling, a racy ad or simply a plate of cheese fries, it may seem like everything is triggering steamy thoughts. You can point the blame for the distracting daydreams toward high estrogen and testosterone. As these hormones reach their peak in your Week 2, they rev your desire for passion to cycle-long highs.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Compared to Week 2, the world may seem like a slightly grayer version of itself. Food may not be as delicious. TV shows may not seem as funny. And things that got you excited may not trigger the same enthusiasm now. That’s due to a combination of rising progesterone and lower levels of estrogen, which create brain changes that make experiences feel less intense than they did last week.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re more likely to be choosing comfort over style today. Which means you may don baggier duds, whip together an outfit that doesn’t quite match or dare to wear clothes with stains or holes out in public. You may also lighten up on makeup (or skip it altogether) and grab the nearest hair tie to deal with whatever’s going on upstairs. The reason for the blasé attitude about how you look? Plunging estrogen. As the level of this hormone drops, it’s making you care less about how others see you and care more about making yourself happy.
