HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Thursday, September 19, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: During the first few days of your period, menstruation-related aches and pains may make you feel like eating the way you did during your premenstrual Week 4–you may opt for more foods from the naughty list than the healthy list, like chips, ice cream and pizza (and not the kind made with whole grain crust and low-fat cheese either). So, if you’re trying to watch your weight or your health, you may find it more of a challenge to stick to your good-foods plan on these days. However, by the time your period ends, you’ll likely notice that cravings subside, your appetite lessens a bit and you even prefer to eat healthier, happily choosing salads and low-fat foods. Credit goes to a higher level of estrogen, which exerts a slight appetite-suppressing effect while also revving your desire to improve your health.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Careful today, Week 2 gal: The revved mental and physical energy you’re getting from your high estrogen and testosterone could be prompting you to start so many projects, you get a bit overwhelmed with all the details and to-dos you’ve piled on your plate! So, if you can, try to pace yourself. By taking a slower approach, you’ll actually up your odds of getting more of your projects completed.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Friends and family will likely be getting extra attention from you today. That’s because research shows you’re more loyal and faithful to those who are close to you during your Week 3 thanks to rising progesterone–a hormone that motivates you to strengthen emotional bonds with those you love.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may notice that during your premenstrual week, you’re less sure of yourself. For instance, you may write a sentence, then rewrite it, then rewrite it again because you’re not certain you got it right. Or you may start to say something, then stop yourself because you’re worried others may think it sounds silly. The reason for all your waffling is plunging estrogen. As the level of this hormone drops, it reduces your self-confidence. Luckily, researchers say boosting it back up is easy: Simply think back to times you did really well. Doing so reminds you of how capable and talented you are, making you more self-assured.
