My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your Week 1 goes on, rising estrogen is doing its best to help you see the brighter side of life, for instance, you may notice that the weather is gorgeous, someone’s scarf is pretty or that a raspberry scone is absolutely delicious. That’s because as the level of this hormone climbs, it prompts the brain to churn out feel-good brain chemicals that make you more prone to focusing on positive things. Oh, you probably won’t feel like Mary Poppins and be humming tunes to little birds all day long. But, these wonderfully positive moments will pop up a bit more frequently. So enjoy them when they do!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find it difficult to focus on boring to-dos if you’re stuck inside today. That’s because high estrogen is giving you the itch to get out into the world. As a result, you may think of any excuse to leave work, school or home, for instance, by running errands that definitely don’t need to be done or heading to the one coffee shop that makes the perfect pumpkin latte that just happens to be two towns away.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may feel like there’s a war going on inside your brain today whenever food is involved: While you may be thinking “healthy salad”, “low-fat sandwich” or “filling soup”, you’re probably still eating the full-fat everything. The problem is that rising progesterone can be kind of a bully when it comes to food ordering and what this hormone wants is lots of calories with a big side of fat. Researchers speculate progesterone does this because it wants you to eat for two in case you got pregnant during ovulation at the end of your Week 2. So, till your body figures out you’re still dining solo, you may have to work a little harder to stick to any healthy eating regimen.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Pay attention to hunches today. Research shows that the down mood triggered by plunging estrogen makes you more likely to pick up on subtle cues around you–even if you’re not fully conscious of them. So, if you get a gut feeling that a salesperson isn’t telling you the truth or that a certain road isn’t safe to take, it may be because you noticed something that tipped you off.
