HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Thursday, July 4, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your Week 1 goes on, climbing estrogen is prompting your inner flirt to come on out. Even if you don’t realize it, you’re likely initiating more conversations, being more playful, gussying yourself up and/or heading to places where there are more people you can interact with.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Research shows that when shopping today, you’re prone to splurging on makeup, jewelry, clothes, hair accessories and other beauty items. That’s high estrogen’s influence. As this hormone climbs toward its peak in Week 2 of your cycle, it makes you more likely to spend on products that boost your attractiveness as a way to lure in a new mate or entice your current one in time for ovulation at the end of this week.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: When you look in the mirror today, you may be a little hard on yourself. The problem is that lower levels of estrogen and testosterone are taking away the high confidence and self-esteem you enjoyed in your Week 2. What’s more, rising progesterone is triggering bloat and constipation, which can make you feel a bit heavier than you did last week. My advice? When you’re tempted to think negative thoughts about your appearance, remember all the good traits you love about your personality–such as your honesty or what a hard worker you are. Research shows that this simple technique boosts flagging self-esteem, making you feel wonderful about yourself–both inside and out.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: It may seem like Murphy’s Law–where anything that can go wrong will go wrong–is more like a general rule rather than an occasional happenstance today. That’s due to plunging estrogen. As the level of this hormone drops lower and lower, it makes you more prone to focusing on the bad stuff rather than the good stuff, which makes the bad stuff feel like it occurs more often. Chances are, if you think hard enough, you may realize that there were at least a few positive things that have gone on in your day. And in my opinion, getting one day closer to your Week 1–where PMS ends and lovely mood-lifting estrogen rises–counts!
