HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Thursday, July 25, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your Week 1 goes on, you’re more apt to enjoy it when strangers strike up conversations and joke around with you while you’re shopping or running errands. In fact, you may even see it as an opportunity (or even destiny!) because this person could end up being a potential client, friend or even romantic partner. That’s because rising estrogen is boosting your mood, optimism and desire to talk, making you more open to unexpected, fun conversations and believing they could potentially result in something positive.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’re in a new relationship or dream of being in a relationship with a certain someone, more of your thoughts will center on that person today thanks to high estrogen and testosterone, which ratchet up all those awesome young love, head-over-heels feelings. However, if you’re in a long-term relationship where those over-the-top feelings have slightly faded, you may find yourself sneaking glances at other cuties–even if you totally adore the cutie you currently have. Why the wandering eye? As researchers explain it, once you get to this fertile phase of your cycle, your hormones push you to take another look around to see if there’s someone more suitable to fertilize your egg at the end of the month. They don’t care that the sweetheart already in your life makes a mean blueberry waffle and never steals the covers at night.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: A lot of women write to me saying they’ve gotten lost when tracking their cycle and don’t know when they’ll be entering their Week 3. Luckily, figuring out when you transition from your Week 2 to your Week 3 is pretty easy: First off, Week 3 is like the polar opposite of Week 2 due to a big shift in hormones–estrogen and testosterone go from peaking to nosediving sharply and bottomed-out progesterone starts to rise. The result? High energy is replaced by a bit of fatigue. Sharp brain and verbal skills are replaced by some fogginess and forgetfulness. A revved desire for romance is replaced by a revved desire for doughnuts, chips and other snacks. An upbeat mood and adventurous spirit is replaced by a bit of sadness or irritation and a preference for playing it safe. And if all those brain and body changes weren’t enough of a tip-off, I recommend the “dipstick test”, where you check your vaginal secretions for a key clue: In Week 2, vaginal secretions are thin, slick and clear like egg white. In Week 3, they become cloudy, thick and drier due to rising progesterone. See, easy, right?

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Unlike Week 1 gals, if salespeople, folks on line next to you in the coffee shop and other strangers try to joke around with you, chances are, you won’t feel like joking back and may even get super-annoyed by the person’s attempt to engage your silly side. That’s because plunging estrogen is making you more serious and less easily amused by other people’s antics. Plus, you’re not as chatty, so making conversation, faking a smile and forcing chuckles at someone’s attempts at humor is more of a chore. What’s more, a plunging estrogen pessimistic streak probably has you believing no good could come of talking with a stranger. In fact, you may even worry it could make you a target for crime or, worse, make them think you were actually interested in hearing more!
