HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Thursday, July 11, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Once you’re past the achy, tiring part of your period, you’re going to be laughing more easily, for instance, you might chuckle at jokes on TV even though it’s a re-run you’ve seen 10 times before or the way someone says or does something might strike you as ridiculously funny. Thanks for the high humor goes to rising estrogen, which prompts a greater production of guffaw-inducing endorphins in the brain as it climbs.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your sense of smell and taste sharpen in your Week 2 thanks to sky-high estrogen. This means you’re detecting subtle aromas and flavors you might otherwise miss during other weeks of your cycle. On top of that, this peaking hormone is making you more open and adventurous about trying something different. So, if I were you, Week 2 gal, I’d do my best to seek out new things to smell and new foods to eat!

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: In Week 2 of your cycle, high estrogen and testosterone were pushing you to spend, spend, spend. Your budget felt limitless and prices weren’t much of a concern. This changes in your Week 3. The overconfidence you had about your budget is slowly replaced by worry that your money is running out. That is, unless you spot a decorative item you think would make your home more beautiful or comfortable or if you set your eyes on a decadent treat. Then, you’ll be throwing caution to the wind and plunking down your credit card in a snap. The reason? Research shows that rising progesterone in your Week 3 makes you more impulsive specifically about home goods and food purchases because it’s amping up your desire to feather your nest and eat calorie-rich meals, snacks and desserts, which override your fear about money issues.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may avoid taking advantage of a potential opportunity–for instance, you may not apply for a dream job because you think it’s out of your league or you may not flirt with a cutie because you don’t feel you look your best. The problem is that plunging estrogen is robbing your brain of chemicals needed to boost confidence and make you feel self-assured. So, what can you do about it? A Facebook follower reminded me of an oh-so-simple technique that revs confidence fast: Stand like Wonder Woman! Sounds strange, but research shows that when you strike a “power pose”, for instance, by standing up straight with your hands on your hips and your legs apart, for two minutes, your body automatically churns out a surge of testosterone–a hormone that makes you feel like you can conquer the world!
