HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Thursday, December 5, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’ve got a tight deadline, been asked to help solve a sticky problem or are working on a big project, good news: Research shows that short-term stress makes you smarter during your menstrual week! That’s because this type of stress combined with rising estrogen wakes up your brain, making you more focused and alert.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: High estrogen is making you more likely to be in a positive mood today. However, the same hormone can also trigger antisness, racing thoughts or anxiety by overexciting your brain. When you need to calm high-hormone edginess, try sipping chamomile tea, doing yoga, meditating or exercising. All are study-proven to help relax you.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 3, you may experience irritability or the blues due to the first of two estrogen dips in your cycle (the second dip happens in your premenstrual Week 4). If it’s the second half of your Week 3, estrogen rises again, making you feel calmer and less moody. That is, as long as you eat. When progesterone rises, it makes you more sensitive to drops in blood sugar between meals, which can prompt the “hunger crankies” if you go too long without noshing. So, keep snacks in your purse or pocket in case you notice your mood going south and need a quick fix.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find it difficult to focus for long periods on a project, book or speech. The problem is that plunging estrogen is sapping your mental energy, so it’s going to take a bit more effort to concentrate.
