My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend, you may feel the itch to shop anyway. That’s rising estrogen’s influence. As this hormone climbs, it prompts the brain to release more feel-good chemicals when you peruse stores and check out the merchandise, making splurging even more fun.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’re searching for love (or simply want to flirt), you don’t need to head to an expensive nightclub or sign up for speed dating. Simply take a closer look around you today–cuties are more likely to be noticing you where ever you go. That’s because high estrogen is boosting your beauty by making your features slightly more symmetrical and feminine, it’s making the way you walk more alluring and it’s prompting your body to churn out scentless chemicals called pheromones that make others find you more attractive. Thing is, many of us are completely clueless when someone is interested even when they’re right in front of us, so we miss the opportunity to connect. In fact, a recent study of “missed connections” reveals that the most common places folks miss out on talking with someone they’re interested in are places where we’re simply running errands, like the supermarket and Wal-Mart! Sounds like a good reason to take a second glance around while going through your daily tasks!

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Give yourself more time to get ready for work, appointments or anywhere else that requires you to be somewhere at a certain time. Rising progesterone is slowing you down, which can make it take longer to do your hair, get dressed and prepare in other ways, causing you to run a bit behind.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: For some women, premenstrual irritability is a frequent occurrence. For others, it’s a rare event. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, you can reduce your chances of a premenstrual temper flare by not overdoing it on caffeinated coffee and tea since caffeine is known to worsen anger by upping anxiety. And be sure to eat throughout the day since you’re more sensitive to drops in blood sugar in the second half of your cycle, which can trigger the hunger crankies. And if you feel irritation start to rise, try sniffing a lavender-scented soy candle or dabbing on lavender essential oil. Research shows that lavender eases premenstrual anger by prompting the brain to release calming chemicals.
