Week 1

Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: In the first half of your Week 1, pain and fatigue from menstrual cramps may keep you on the quiet side. However, the world should watch out once the second half of your Week 1 arrives: Rising estrogen is boosting your desire to chat and connect with others. As a result, you may keep a salesperson talking long after the growing line of customers behind you starts winding around the candy display case, you may strike up long conversations with innocent by-standers at the supermarket who are trying to rush home to watch their favorite TV show, or you may call friends out of the blue just to say “Hi” and keep them on the phone 20 minutes past the first time they say, “Okay, I gotta go now.” 

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: It’s a lot easier to impress you today, for instance, when meeting someone new, sampling a new food or listening to a pal’s proposal for a girls-only getaway. That’s because high estrogen is ratcheting up your excitement and enthusiasm to cycle-long highs, making new experiences seem more thrilling.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may decide to boost the safety of your home (for instance, by upgrading your smoke detectors), car (say, by giving it a tune-up) or bike (for example, by attaching reflectors to it). That’s progesterone’s influence. As the level of this hormone climbs, it makes you want to take more precautions to protect you and your loved ones from harm.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find that at times you’re forcing yourself to smile, going through the motions at a party or faking it some other way today. The problem is that plunging estrogen is reducing levels of feel-good chemicals in the brain. So, while you may genuinely want to feel the way others expect you to, it may not be coming naturally and you don’t want to let your true emotions show. The good news? Strangely, the “fake it till you make it” approach can actually be beneficial. Numerous studies show that acting happy and smiling even when you don’t feel like it can boost a flagging mood by sending a message to the brain that says, “Hey, I’m happy!” which, in response, prompts the brain to churn out feel-good chemicals to match the mood you’re telling it you’re in.
