Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Today’s hormone horoscope: In the last week of your cycle, you may have thought someone or something was totally out of your league. As estrogen and testosterone climb today, they raise your confidence and feelings of self-worth, making you think that whatever you want really is within reach!
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone horoscope: Take a moment to enjoy the bliss of Week 2. It only comes around once a month, after all. And it’s the one week of your cycle where you’re the most attractive, in the least amount of pain, the smartest, the most energetic and the most likely to experience random and unexpected bouts of euphoria (which you’ll probably think is due to whatever activity you’re doing or person you’re with, but it’s not) and it’s all because of high estrogen and testosterone. As these hormones reach their peaks in Week 2, they do everything they can to your body and brain to get you to attract a mate. That these lovely physical and mental side effects can be used for so much more, such as totally killing it at a presentation, learning to climb circus ropes or launching a business, is a definite plus!
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone horoscope: Allot more time to do tasks today. During your Week 2, high estrogen and testosterone had you doing everything faster: typing, walking, talking. Today not so much. These pep-boosting hormones are on the downswing and you’re also now contending with a week full of rising progesterone, a slow-you-down hormone if there ever was one (some research shows it’s as sedating as drugs they give you in the hospital!). Anyway, whether you realize it or not, you’ll be a tad slower today, so it’s easier to fall behind. By allotting more time for each to-do, you’ll stay on track and avoid the stress that inevitably comes from feeling like the day is getting away from you.
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Today’s hormone horoscope: You know that groggy, I-just-woke-up feeling you get right after you get out of bed? Yeah, well, you may be feeling that way a lot longer today. As estrogen and testosterone plunge, they zap your pep, coordination, brain skills. Pretty much everything you need to stay sharp. Luckily, if you’ve got an important meeting or task where you need to be on point, you can easily rev your engines by taking a brisk walk or doing any kind of moderate to vigorous exercise, which will wake up your brain and body. What I don’t recommend is chugging a gallon of your favorite caffeinated whatever-cino. During the premenstrual Week 4 phase, caffeine has been shown to trigger anger and moodiness. By contrast, exercise triggers endorphins, those little brain chemicals that make you feel super-happy!
