My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Once the fog of menstruation lifts, you’ll probably notice you become more and more competitive as your Week 1 and Week 2 go on. For instance, you may be playing more aggressively in board games or video games. Hearing about someone else’s success may make you want to surpass it. Or you may decide you want to run for some kind of office or position of power at work, school or within an organization. Credit for your competitiveness goes to rising estrogen, which enhances testosterone–a hormone that revs confidence and urges you to be leader of the pack!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Careful, Week 2 gal: It’s far easier for someone to get you to say “yes” to something, for instance, a fast-talking salesperson who wants to make a big sale or a friend who needs a big favor, like help moving. That’s because high estrogen and testosterone are revving your mood, excitement, optimism and impulsiveness, so you’re more easily persuaded that whatever is being asked of you is totally easy and worth jumping into head-first. So, try to pause before signing any contracts or agreeing to any favors to consider whether it’s really the best decision for you.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Longtime Hormonology fans have probably heard me share this tip before, but with so many new recent fans, it bears repeating for those who haven’t heard: While rising progesterone is slowing you down and tiring you out, if you can peel yourself off the couch and exercise, the rewards will be great. That’s because all throughout Week 3 and most of Week 4, your body burns an impressive 30% more fat when you exercise than it did during the first two weeks of your cycle! Researchers explain that the combination of estrogen and progesterone during this phase makes your body more efficient at using fat as fuel.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may feel more physically sensitive today. For example, if someone steps on your toe, it may ache longer. You may think it’s too hot, too cold, too sticky or too dry. You could have trouble getting comfortable on a chair or couch. Or your waistband or bra may pinch or bind in a way that totally annoys you all day. What gives? The problem is that plunging estrogen reduces the brain’s level of pain-masking endorphins while also bringing down your mood a notch or two–a combination that can make you both more prone to discomfort and more aware of it than during other weeks of your cycle.
