My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Take out your calendar and start filling in those date boxes for this week and next week with all the doctor appointments, exams, social events and errands you need to get done this month. The second half of Week 1 through the end of Week 2 is the best phase of your cycle to tackle anything that requires mental or physical oomph, courage or extroversion since rising estrogen is giving all these to you in abundance!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: While Week 2 is generally a time for upbeat emotions thanks to high estrogen and testosterone, keep in mind these peaking hormones can also prompt a bit of anxiety or stress. So, have soothing tension-tamers in mind in case you need them, such as deep, slow breathing, taking a relaxing walk or distracting yourself with a video game, drive to the beach or chat with a friend.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: A medical concern of yours or a loved one may be on your mind today. That’s because as estrogen and testosterone dip to lower levels and progesterone rises, you become more focused on health issues and may feel less confident about their statuses, making you worry that they’re not being tended to correctly or in a timely manner.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find that it’s more difficult to get sound sleep tonight. The problem is that plunging estrogen is lowering levels of sleep-regulating serotonin in the brain while also making you more sensitive to things that can keep you awake or rouse you out of a sound slumber, like the cat meowling, the light from the digital alarm clock or pjs that itch or bind. So, what can you do to get deeper, more restorative sleep? First, try various methods to help you wind down, for instance, sipping chamomile tea a couple of hours prior to bedtime or doing calming meditation before turning in. Then, try to head off sleep-robbers, maybe by putting in ear plugs, wearing a sleep mask or wearing your most comfortable nightshirt. With just a few bedtime tweaks, you can get the sounder sleep you seek.
