HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Friday, October 18, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may be inspired to pick up a project where you left off, restart a hobby you left behind or find a new interest to pursue. Credit goes to rising estrogen, which boosts energy, curiosity, motivation and a desire for fun and to achieve as it climbs.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your thoughts may be a bit scattered today. For instance, you may be thinking about a piece of a project you have to work on, and that then reminds you of another task you have to do on a different project, which then prompts you to get an idea about how to tackle a problem you’ve been having, which then makes you think about an errand you have to run. The problem is that high estrogen is boosting your mental energy to cycle-long highs, so it takes a bit more effort to rein in thoughts and focus. Luckily, if you can manage to home in on one task, you can use this lift in mental energy to gain a lot of ground on it today.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Be careful of overstuffed couches, reclining chairs and anything resembling a pillow. If you sit or lie down on any of these today, chance are, you’ll never want to get back up. That’s progesterone’s fault. As this sedating hormone climbs, it’s pushing you to relax the day away and do nothing more strenuous than nap and wake up occasionally for treats before going back to sleep.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Put the tweezers down and step away from the bathroom mirror. While plunging estrogen may be making you unhappy with your appearance, today is not the day to reshape eyebrows, poke at blemishes, cut new bangs or do any other irreparable cosmetic job to your face. That’s because this same plummeting hormone is making you a tad more negative and likely to see your “fix” as making things worse, prompting you to go at it again. And again. And, well, we all know how this ends, right? In a heaping pile of sobbing tears on the floor, wondering who could love us with no eyebrows and a fringe so short it sticks up straight. So, wait till estrogen rises again in Week 1 before making any “improvements”. Chances are, once the level of this hormone climbs, you’ll see you look just fine the way you already are.
