Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: While your Week 1 may get off to a slow start, once you’re past the achy, painful part of your period, you’ll likely be planning lunches with pals, seeking out parties to attend, wondering about ways to meet a new cutie (or bump into the one you’ve been eyeing) and/or thinking up other ways to socialize. That’s rising estrogen’s influence. As this hormone climbs higher and higher, it makes you extroverted, chatty and interested in connecting with others.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: High estrogen prompts changes in the brain that make you more easily excitable, which can exaggerate a passionate emotion you’re feeling. For example, if you discover someone has wronged you, you may not just get angry–you could get so incensed you plot the kind of revenge usually seen in B movies. Or if someone surprises you with a big gift, you may not just squeal in delight–you may actually tackle the gift-giver in a rush to give her a big thank-you hug. I could give you a bit of advice about taking a moment or two to pause before overreacting (ovary-acting?) today, but high testosterone is making you so impulsive, chances are, you wouldn’t follow it, anyway.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: It may take a lot more to impress you and win you over in your Week 3 than it did in your Week 2. For example, things a hottie did to catch your eye that you thought were cute or charming just last week could seem immature or silly this week. Or a video game you thought was fun or thrilling last week may seem ho-hum in this one. What gives? While your hormones made you upbeat and easily excited last week, this week’s rising progesterone combined with lower levels of estrogen and testosterone make you more level-headed and sedate.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: In Week 2 of your cycle, you weren’t happy unless you were trying something new and different due to high estrogen, which revved your thirst for adventure. In your premenstrual Week 4, however, you’re happiest parked in your favorite easy chair watching old re-runs while munching on much-loved treats or doing other activities that you’ve done them a thousand times before. That’s because plunging estrogen brings down your confidence while upping aches and irritation, so you gravitate toward comforting experiences that you know are guaranteed to boost your mood and distract you from pain.
