Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises

Credit for your take-charge attitude goes to rising estrogen. As the level of this hormone climbs through your Week 1 and Week 2, it makes you feel more positive and in control, which gives you the sense that you really can make adjustments that improve the situation.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’ll likely want to move pretty quickly when you get a desire to do something, for instance, you may decide you want a new couch and then run right out and buy one or you may decide to start writing a book and then sketch out a full outline in a single day. You can point to rising estrogen and testosterone for your speedy ways. When the levels of these hormones climb, they make you more impulsive and focused on seeing immediate results.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re going to need to try to buck up your motivation and resolve today. While these came easy during the first two weeks of your cycle when you were propelled by rising estrogen and testosterone, these hormones are lower this week. On top of that, you’ve got slow-you-down progesterone to contend with. As a result, if you have a diet, exercise regimen, project or other goal that requires drive, you’re going to have to work harder to maintain it.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your challenge today is to maintain focus when working on a task that really needs to get done, for instance, a project at work or paying bills. With estrogen plunging, you have less mental willpower, which makes you more easily distracted by anything that’s even slightly more interesting than dull to-dos.
