Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Take the opportunity to put together that lamp you bought six months ago that’s still in the box, put up a new curtain rod, hang pictures, plot out the designs for a new addition to your home, build a go-cart or do anything else that requires spatial skills–the ability to rotate mental images in your head. Research shows your spatial skills excel during your Week 1 because low estrogen allows testosterone–a hormone that boosts this ability–to dominate.
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’re a longtime fan of the Hormone Horoscope, then you probably know by now that Week 2 is when high estrogen and testosterone make your mood more positive than during any other week of your cycle. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you’re going to be all sweetness and light 24/7, sprinkling glitter and doling out cupcakes where ever you go. This upbeatness is more like a general trend. You’ll still get irked when someone puts an empty milk carton back in the fridge or dings your car in the parking lot. (And these high hormones are giving you the confidence to complain about them–loudly–to the culprit.) But, your hormones are also making you likely to recover from the irritation faster so you can return to your regularly-scheduled Week 2 bliss once again.
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Try not to pay too much attention to the bathroom scale or mirror today. Rising progesterone is prompting constipation and water retention–a combination that can temporarily add on one to two pounds, making you feel a bit heavier. Once this hormone bottoms out at the start of Week 1, these problems–and the added weight they brought with them–should disappear.
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As your estrogen plunges in your premenstrual Week 4, it can make you more easily annoyed by disgusting scents, such as garbage, dirty laundry or cigarette smoke. And it can even make aromas you generally love, like candles, perfume or garlic, smell too strong. Keep this in mind when dabbing on your favorite essential oil, using an aromatic bath oil or choosing what to cook for dinner. Otherwise, you may be spending a good chunk of your day trying to get rid of the offending scent.
