Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may notice it doesn’t take long for your desire for romance to kick in once your Week 1 starts. That’s rising estrogen’s fault. As this hormone climbs, it kicks the match-making part of your brain into high gear, pushing you to find ways to meet a new love or connect with your current one.
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: All throughout Week 2, high estrogen is intensifying the pleasure you get from positive experiences by prompting a higher output of feel-good brain chemicals every time you do something you enjoy. (That’s like getting two scoops of your favorite ice cream, then being given a freshly-baked, still warm gooey brownie to pair them with!) So, if I were you, I would be sure to fit in a lot of pleasurable activities today, such as hanging out with your best buds, seeing a new movie, going for a run, eating a delicious meal, shopping or smooching!
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: This week, I received an email out of the blue on behalf of a large corporation (who shall remain nameless) offering a “huge opportunity” for me and my Hormone Horoscopes. As I’m in my Week 3, I didn’t get overly excited. Instead, I thought back to all the other huge opportunities big corporations have dangled in front of me over the past few years that never materialized and decided to expect nothing, but be grateful if something did happen. In the end, after a quick five-minute phone call, it was clear there was no huge opportunity. But, because I didn’t expect anything, I didn’t have any let-down. I bring this up to illustrate that if you receive potentially good news in your Week 3 (say, that you may be getting a raise or an agent is interested in your movie script), you’re more prone to taking a realistic look at it and not expect too much. That’s because the combination of rising progesterone coupled with lower levels of estrogen are slowing you down and making you more cautious, so you’re likely to take the time to assess the situation for what it really is. By comparison, if you received the news in your Week 1 or Week 2, rising estrogen would likely have you so optimistic that you’d already be envisioning the many ways your life would change if, I mean when, it materialized. And if you received the news in your Week 4, plunging estrogen may make you convinced you’ll never get the good news you want.

Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you read Week 2’s Hormone Horoscope for today, you’ll see that high estrogen is amplifying good feelings from pleasurable activities. Cue the envy: Throughout your Week 4, you’ll notice the opposite effect–plunging estrogen is amplifying aches, pains and annoyances from unpleasurable experiences. That’s because as estrogen descends, it lowers levels of feel-good brain chemicals. So, if I were you, I’d avoid unpleasurable experiences as much as possible, such as grocery shopping when the store is packed (so you avoid getting bumped by some oblivious jerk’s cart), talking with that frenemy at work (who still thinks you haven’t caught on that she’s just pretending to be nice) and ordering something unusual at a restaurant just because the waitress says it’s delicious (she’s probably just saving the good stuff for herself!).
