About Me:

For nearly 20 years, I've been a women's health and lifestyle journalist, reporting on medical breakthroughs, self-help tips and hormones for dozens of major magazines and newspapers in the U.S. and around the globe, including Cosmo, CosmoGIRL, Glamour, Marie Claire and the New York Daily News. I currently write the weekly "News You Need Now" health news feature in Woman's World magazine and have been a regular contributor to the publication for over 15 years.

In 1999, I was the first person to discover that the thousands of studies conducted about female hormones could be connected and plugged into every day of a monthly menstrual cycle. I then used this information to create the first and only menstrual cycle calendar that enables women to predict their moods, health and behavior every day of their cycles based solely on the ups-and-downs of their estrogen, testosterone and progesterone--which I call the Hormone Horoscope®.

How I created Hormonology
and the Hormone Horoscope:

I've always been a voracious reader of women's magazines (big surprise). I loved the how-to articles, the recipes, the DIYs. And the quizzes. Definitely the quizzes. You know, the ones like "What kind of flirt are you?", "Who's your best romantic match-up?", "What's your secret career goal that you don't even know about?". Who could resist filling out those, right?

Thing is, I always thought it was odd that whenever I took any of these magazine quizzes twice on different days, I'd give two completely different sets of answers!

For instance? On some days, I'd check all the boxes that asked if I was outgoing, flirtatious, bold and confident. Other days, my answers would be just the opposite: I'd be convinced I was more the shy, retiring type who was introverted, cautious and self-effacing. On some days, my answers would be in line with someone who loved adventure, starting new businesses and showing off my smarts. On other days, I'd check off boxes that were more in line with someone who preferred routine, enjoyed quiet times at home and felt a bit foggy-headed. On some days, I was certain I was attracted to rugged, athletic, ambitious cuties and wasn't ready to settle down. On other days, I checked off that all I wanted was a sweet, sensitive nerdy type to share my whole life with.

The question nagged me for years: How could I feel, behave and think so differently from day to day? Was I taking these tests wrong? Did I not have a single clue who I really was? Was I losing my marbles?

Then something miraculous happened that finally gave me the answer I was seeking.

In 1999 while researching medical studies for a health article I was writing, I stumbled across a study in the journal Nature that revealed women feel more drawn toward masculine-looking men during the second week of their cycle due to peaking estrogen and they feel more drawn toward feminine-looking men during other weeks of their cycle due to lower levels of estrogen.

As surprised as I was by this study, I had a hunch that there were probably more hormone studies like this that revealed how hormones impact our emotions, behavior and thoughts across the menstrual cycle so I set out to find them. And I was right!

For several years, I collected and pored over hundreds of hormone studies conducted by noted scientists from around the globe, read a mountain of books about hormones and interviewed leading hormone researchers. And, I came to two stunning conclusions:

1. Our hormones impact virtually everything we do! The hormones in a woman's monthly cycle affect nearly every aspect of our day—brain skills, mood, energy, libido, cravings, shopping habits, chattiness, voice, taste buds, extroversion, confidence, pain sensitivity, chronic illness flare-ups, skin health and much, much more.

2. Our hormones can actually help us predict the outcome of our day! While our hormonal affects change day-to-day, these effects repeat in the same pattern cycle after cycle. Which means that healthy, naturally-cycling women can use their hormone cycle to predict what every single day will be like with scientific accuracy!

Armed with this insight, I kept a daily journal for three months, detailing virtually every aspect of my life—my moods, foods I ate, products I purchased, how much I talked or how quiet I felt, my libido, how many invitations to social events I accepted or turned down, aches and pains, you name it. And I was impressed by how much my behavior and health mirrored the findings in these hormones studies. Yet, after examining the science behind hormones, all these changes in my emotions, behavior and thoughts now all made perfect sense.

I now understood why one day I could be outgoing, yet another day introverted. Why one day I could be attracted to rugged types, another day to sensitive nerds. And so on. Even better, I can now predict when I'd be feeling a certain way based solely on where I was in my monthly cycle. So handy!

Wanting to share this insight with other women, I continued researching hormone studies and included the results of my years of work in my book, 28 Days: What Your Cycle Reveals about Your Love Life, Moods and Potential--the first-and-only daily horoscope based on a woman's monthly hormones--which has been translated into four languages and was named "one of the top 10 women’s health books of 2005" by About.com.

From there, I launched my newsletter, started my blog and created apps--all to share the power of using your hormones to predict your day. I'm now working on an updated version of my book, 28 Days.

My Mission:

Every week, I receive emails from women who tell me, "I wish I had known this hormone information at the time I got my first period."

Then they go to explain how knowing in advance how their hormones impact them would have saved them so much time trying to understand why they experienced these changes. Many said they wondered if they were losing their marbles or didn't understand themselves.

Just as importantly, they regret that they weren't able to capitalize on beneficial hormonal effects--for instance, scheduling demanding tasks on days in their cycle when they knew their energy would be high. And they didn't have a heads-up about hormonal challenges so they could try to overcome them--for instance, planning extra sleep on cycle days when hormones are tiring you out.

My mission is to create more awareness of how women's hormones impact moods, health and behavior all cycle long.

I want to ensure that my generation of women is the last one that doesn't go into their menstrual cycles blind--not knowing how the new ups-and-downs of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone will be playing a major role in virtually every aspect of their day, including their moods, energy, memory, pain sensitivity, chattiness, confidence and so on.
